Our yellow and orange Ikat x Kantha shirt is a beautiful overlying of two Indian indigenous crafts encased in a lovestory from Village Nanoor in Bengal. The shirt lives to tell the story of Chandidas and Rojokini from Nanoor. Chandidas is a young boy grew up fishing in the village. He would walk to the pond next to his village every morning to catch a fresh batch and that’s where he meets Rojokini, who visits the pond to wash clothes with her wooden bat ; a common practice in rural India. They see each other almost every morning and eventually fell in love. It is believed that their love was so strong that when Rojokini died, the wooden bat she used to wash clothes with, turned to stone. The story is passed down as a folktale in the village to this date. If you ever get a chance to visit Nanoor, you can find their statues in the village centre.

Our Kantha artisan Ajija turned this story into a beautiful Kantha motif and now it lives to tell its tale. The shirt has a beautiful single ikat pattern all over with the folklore of Nanoor overlying on top in Kantha. Super light and airy, but a statement nonetheless! It’s oversized, boxy, and unisex; Ikat fabric is hand woven and dyed with love by artisans in the state of Telangana and Kantha is done by Ajija and her team of women artisans who embroidered this vibrant story on our Ikat shirt.

Along with our team of artisans, we have curated a range of Ikat woven designs for the base fabric that you choose from and create your own custom design.
